1244 Chapter 1 - Introduction
Your potential as a safe, professional driver boils down to what you bring to the job –
your . . .
- driving attitude
- beliefs
- habits, and
- expectations
How’s your driving attitude?
Attitude is reflected in your mental or emotional regard for yourself, for others, for your employer, for your equipment, and for the surrounding conditions. Drivers with a poor attitude are always quick to find an excuse for mistakes. Driving attitudes are not inborn; they are learned and, therefore, can be improved.
Operator attitude also has an effect on public relations. One of the quickest ways to antagonize the public is to drive vehicles in a careless manner. It must be recognized that courtesy goes hand in hand with safety.
What are your driving beliefs?
You operate your equipment based on what you believe to be true and correct. Sometimes those beliefs are based on guesswork, misinformation, and gossip, not facts. What is the basis for your beliefs about driving?
What are your driving habits? Most of what you do in operating vehicles is done from habit. You do not consciously have to think about each and every thing you do when you drive. Rather, your subconscious performs most techniques. But it’s important to remember that a bad habit is as easy to develop as a good one. Take a good, hard look at your driving habits. Are you training yourself to do the right things the right way, like fastening your seat belt, checking your mirrors, and maintaining safe following distances?
What are your driving expectations?
High expectations result in continual improvements in your driving techniques. You can be as proficient at operating your vehicle as you want to be. It’s up to you to apply all the information and suggestions in this program on how to improve your driving.
Defensive driving techniques are few and simple. Basically,
they involve being careful to commit no errors yourself, and making allowances for the light, weather, traffic, road, vehicle conditions.
In summary:
- Drive at a speed that’s proper for conditions and the vehicle.
- Pay attention to your surroundings.
- Think ahead, plan ahead, and act ahead in all driving conditions.
